Charity Race Night 2018
19 November 2018
Much like our annual darts tournament, we wanted to make our event super fun, but also a bit educational. Since we’d never held a race night and many new team mates had never been to the races or bet on horses before, we thought it would be a lot of fun to combine that with a charity event.
The gambling element was pools betting - there were no odds on horses, participants could place a bet on any horse they liked and the returns were equally split between the winners and charity. We made absolutely no profit.
There were 56 horses on offer for 8 races and their owners could name them anything they liked. The winning horse owners received a bottle of prosecco and could watch the races from the winners enclosure. Our race sponsors were also given an enclosure and prosecco, with the main sponsor being ActiveWin.
The most hilarious part of the event was when our compere/Operations Director, Rich, had to read out the horse names at the beginning of every race. Some were inside jokes, some plain rude, lots were puntastic and some completely unpronounceable! He even made up additional comments about the jockeys/owners.
It’s fair to say that our horse owners had the most fun in their winners enclosure with lots of prosecco and jaegerbombs flowing.
Our memory is pretty hazy towards the end of the night, but as far as we remember, everyone had a fantastic time. We weren’t just horsing around, we managed to raise over £1,000 from the race night alone and it’s our most successful event yet.
We chose to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice throughout the year, setting a target of £3,000. However, now, we’re getting closer to the £5,000 mark, so who knows, perhaps we’ll beat this by the end of the year! Everyone has made a brilliant effort in donating and participating in our events during the year and we’ve all had great fun doing this.
We’d like to thank our friends at ActiveWin for coming along and supporting us. I’m sure there will be plenty of similar events in the future and we’ll do another race night some time next year.
